Firstly, here is a little bit about me, Harriet. I am going into my third and final year studying Business Management at the University of Reading. I took a year out before going to university where I did a ski season in Les Deux Alpes, France and nannying for a family in Devon. My school friends, who didn’t do a gap year, have all graduated this week. Already I don’t want my third year to end, as I know it will go by in a flash.
My past work experience has always been in the hospitality industry, but since taking modules in marketing at university, I decided this summer I wanted to enter the world of marketing, and Nustream has given me that opportunity!
Week One:
It is week two of my summer internship as the Marketing Intern at Nustream. The first week has flown by with early mornings (normal for most people but I’m used to student starts), meetings and online learning of both Nustream and Xerox, and the latest digital solutions to ‘help your work flow’.
Marketing Intern Life
There is a stereotype that interns are given the ‘grunt’ work. However, at Nustream, they were keen to give me full reins in all things marketing, from event planning to managing the website and social media content – so keep your eyes peeled!!
Also, it is not true that interns only make tea and coffee…we hand out biscuits too. Joking! Don’t worry, everyone takes turns and as an intern they will be keen to get you started on a project. From just one week at Nustream, I have already learnt valuable things about the business world and myself. Here are some of my tips I want to share with you.
Top tips for starting as an intern:
- Listen and learn – In your first week, no one expects you to be an expert. I spent my first week immersing myself into the company to get a better understanding of Nustream and what it does.
- It is best to start at the deep end – On my interview day, I was fortunate to be asked to sit in on a meeting, one of Nustream’s latest ventures. I was a little nervous as I had no idea what I was walking into. However, it gave me a huge insight and understanding of the company, information I can utilise for media content during my internship.
- Network, network, network! I learnt this on day one and it will become your most valuable tool in the business world. Quite often it is about who you know, so put yourself out there and get connecting.
I am certain I will learn many more invaluable tools over the summer, and be faced with some challenges along the way, but I am excited to get stuck in and join the Nustream team! Keep an eye out for my posts, we’ve got some exciting things happening at Nustream this summer.
